Wood carvings of black crappie . The body is carved seperately and the fins are added. Painted with a acrylic. Lake of the Woods black crappie is the reference for the colouration pattern.

Painting a leaping muskie

Begins with a black pen and ink sketch.
This work is a variation of one of my earlier paintings  titled "LUNGE ON THE WING".

The large canvas has the main colours and shapes roughly brushed in.

More re shaping and adding of details including a boat in the distance.

The shoreline marsh and redwing blackbird and water splash details.

Walking a muskie like a "dog"

The moment you consider what a muskie is really wanting to biting in the middle of a the season you immediately think of a lure that creates a lot of surface splash appearing to be vulnerable. A "walk the dog" style retrieve is exactly what is needed. Repeated quick taps on the rod tip of a heavy action fishing rod. the lure to consider is a "Skid Stik" or a Zara Spook style top water design. The first hook
should be back toward the middle of the lure and the lure floating in the water should be tilted with front line connection poking out of the water. the lure should twitch quickly from left to right and cause a repeated series of splashes. Watch behind the lure for a possible rising wake of a following muskie or northern pike. Striking fish will sometimes be quick and startling at other times the fish will follow right to the boat side, keep the lure moving and consider a large figure "eight" or oval maneuver with the lure. Sometimes the the following fish will bite, sometimes it will just continue to swim around and around and eventually swim away. It will probably continue to be in the area. keep trying with repeated casting or move away from the spot and try again later in the day.
Striking fish will create a sudden startling hit with a splash , raise the rod tip to set the hook when you feel the weight of the fish!

Thirsty Pike Beer ART OF THE LABEL DESIGN

This is My exciting new wood carving of the "Thirsty Pike". 

Gananoque Beer Company called me and asked if I could design a caricature of a Northern Pike drinking a beer. This company is located on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River in the town of Gananoque, Ontario.These are my various designs in my progress to the Finished art.

They wanted more bold contrast and colour.

This was a more "sly" looking pike and I used a marker to create this art.

The final art with a larger glass of beer and a slightly more alert northern pike.
This art will appear on the tap at the bar to pour "Thirsty Pike" Pilsener beer.

Giant wood carved muskie painting

Dark hookers green wash brushed over the back and dorsal fin.

 This muskellunge project ws very involved with a lot of detail. The carving is a hollow design.

It measured almost the length of a picnic table.
A wash of green was painted over the bodt and fins were painted yellow ochre.
A metallic pearl i then washed over the previous colour. Cross hatching of the scales are drawn on with a coloured pencil crayon

 The markings are brushed on witha large bristle brush.
A mixture of raw umber and hookers green was used to blend in the shapes
Bright metallic gold was added to the back edge of the scales on the side of the head and along the length of the upper body.

Zesty orange was washed over the fins and a mixture of raw umber was used to create markings on the fins.

A clear coat of "Varathane " was added to over the fish body to create the "wet look".

Early stage of wood carving with the basic shape cut from the layers of pine boards.

 Close up on the head of the muskie all the teeth are added and the shaping of the mouth and outside of the head is shaped and detailed with electric carver "Dremel".
 

All the fins have been completed and the body shaping is completed and ready to be primed with "gesso".
