Fourth Place finish in Pacific Salmon Stamp Art Competition

The "shaman" colour of lure was brought to my attention from Dave of Bare Bones Baits. He was commenting on it's muskie catching appeal. I couldn't resist creating a painting of a muskie about to bite a mouthful of "Shaman" coloured crankbait. I think this is a ten inch long "jake" crankbait.
The scene I'm trying to create is an underwater weedline edge. The lure has been cast or trolled along this edge. A dramatic moment with a sudden burst of speed.The large muskie has bit the lure as it was racing by.

This is an old supercycle bike a a fellow in the neighbourhood was discarding. I couldn't resist adding some blue paint and a sign for my website. The horn is so loud and squeaky it frightens squirrels and birds!

two hour Paint Out Sunday October 9, 2011 in Unionville Ontario

On Sunday the weather was great and there were 13 painters competing in the Ontario Plein Air Society PAINT OUT!

The competition continues for two hours and has the paintings judged at the front of the Frederick Varley Art Gallery.

Starting at 12 noon until about 2 pm.

I decided to paint the spillway at the pond in the park.It was being visited by many people and water fowl.

I even saw someone with a fishing rod!

The Autumn colours were really bright and varied.

I titled my acrylic painting "Sunshine on the spillway"

Dimensions 11 in x 14 in masonite board

I painted the board a bright cerulean sky blue.

At the start of the competition they put a small maple leaf stamp on the back of the painting board to show your marked on the back as an entry in the 2 hour Paint Out.

This was an honorable mention winning painting!

This pastel painting won 2nd place!

This large 24 in x 24 in painting won 3rd!

This watercolur by Jamas Lee won $100. for first place!

It was great see the motivated and ambitious men and women artist gathered in Markham and painting a wonderful variety of scenes!

Top painting:
I'm trying to create the moment when the fish darts out of the weed bed edge.
With a wary look in it's eye

Bottom painting:
This is a deeper water scene with a muskie striking a crank bait ,
made by the Hose bait company of Ontario.
There is a floating leaf on the bottom left edge, showing it's a Fall scene.

The water is a cool blue, like Georgian bay up on Lake Huron or the big river by Gananoque Ontario.

Painting in North West Ontario

This is an acrylic painting I created after fishing with my wife Diane. She had a large muskie swim up and bite her spinning lure. It was alarming ! Suddenly this fish appeared out of no where . It felt the hook in it's mouth and started to rapidly shake it's head.

Fortunately it shook off the hook and swam away. I'd didn't really want to have to get my hands near it's teeth filled mouth to remove the hook and let it go to swim another day. My wife was excited about the size of the fish too.

This is a cool shady spot I painted from shore near Vermilion Bay .
I like the angle of the pine tree leaning out towards the water.
This rocky point on the bay is a good spot to cast from and catch northern pike.
In past decades a small house was built on this point. The area has a great view.

This photograph shows the real scene from the point of view of my painting easel.

This is a details of the head of the recently completed muskie wood carving. There are over a hundred small palatine teeth added to the roof of the mouth. From the tipof the jaw to the back of the gill cover .The head measures a little over 13 inches in length. The total length of the fish carving is 52 inches. The markings of the fish represent a muskellunge caught fron North Western Ontario's Lower Manitou Lake

THIS guy Larry Ramsell claimsin the June 2011 Musky Hunter Magazine that the Canadian Record Muskie was a bit shorter by four inches.
THE OFFICIAL MEASUREMENT has stood since 1988. I wonder how he got the wrong size in his measuring compared to the recognized Official Measurement? My cartoon suggests the reason.

MENACING FOLLOWING MUSKIE PAINTING

This is my new acrylic on canvas painting titled "Close Encounter".
This is a 16in x 20in size canvas.
Inspiration for this art was from many fishing trips which I've seen muskies swimming behing my lure.
It's very unsettling to my nerves to see this behaviour. Most of the time the fish swims away under the boat to hide in the lake .
It features a double bladed spinner with a sparkling hook dressing made by Heavy Metal Lures from Cumberland Wisconsin.

This art will be included in my participation in the ART WAY ART SHOW at the west entrance of Shoppers World.
Located at the corner of Steeles Ave and Highway 10.
The show is titled Fin Fur and Feather. It includes art from the members of Visual Arts BRAMPTON and other invited artists. Keith Moreau the president of the art organization invited me to participate.
The show starts June 24 and continues to the end of July!

2011 Caricature Season at Harbourfront in Toronto Begins!

These are just a few of the interesting people I of whom I drew Caricarture portraits .
I'm usually down at the Harbourfront on sunny days from aroundnoon to early evening.
I like drawing the tourists who have come down to the waters edge to see the sights.
The first portrait was a woman who like riding her bicycle. She is an artist who lives over in
Toronto's High Park area. She was exploring the "Open Door" event and seeing many of the interesting
sights including Petways Pathways. RedPath Sugar, King Edward Hotel the Flat Iron Building!
The next portraits were a couple visiting from South Korea. They liked travelling and seeing the sights in Toronto.

This is an acrylic painting featuring my idea of a muskie

biting a lure I made called the "Wide Eye WOBBLER".

This is a walk the dog style of surface lure. I painted a black crappie speckled contrast

pattern. I tried to create the underwater excitement of sudden thrashing and twisting of the

fish. Casting near a submerged tree is a good spot for other species of fish.

This painting will be in my 2012 Classic Muskie Calendar!

New FIRST MATE LURES logo carved from wood

This is a carving I completed last month and delivered to the Toronto Sportsman Show.
First Mate Lures commissioned this carving as a three dimensional re-creation of their logo which is two dimensional.
This company manufactures fishing lures and accessories that are non-toxic.
They are based in the Ottawa area.
It was a challenge to make the carving as sturdy and durable as possible. They will have it on display at sportshows across central Canada.
Every detail was considered. My wife knitted the net.
It was a fun project.

Northern pike wood carving completed

This is a cool looking customer. A wood carved northern pike. I've recently competed.
It measures 35 in/88 cm in length. My wife caught one like this in June a few years ago on a topwater lure the Rapala Skitter Prop , frog pattern. It was an exciting guided to trip to a back country lake in NorthWestern Ontario's Sunset Country (near Vermilion Bay) close to Eagle LAKE.

This is a detail of my new acrylic painting titled "Timber Ambush". It's not completed yet. I'll be adding a lot more contrast and colour. The detail of what-kind -of- lure to have on it's lip is always an important decision.
I'm considering a yellow perch pattern crankbait or a brightly coloured glidebait.
I hope this will be the cover image for my 2012 Classic Muskie Callendar.
This artwork describes an typical haunt of a muskie.Usually a fallen Birch tree along shoreline deep water is a good area to throw a few casts.

New Muskie fish themed acrylic painting in progress

This is the early progress of a new acrylic painting. I've added the the underpainting of the underwater plants(Richardson's pondweed,potamageton) in the background.
This is a fish that has suddenly turned. I'll be adding a muskie lure of some inspired design in the mouth .
The fish will have spotted markings, like a Northwest Ontario Canada muskie from Eagle Lake.

Cool looking lures at 2011 St. Catherines Muskie Odyssey April 2011

These are a selection of lures I've recently picked-up and will be included in my 2012 Classic Muskie Calendar. The top crank baits are from LEO LURES. Next are group of spinners from down in the Lake St. Clair area. HANDLEBARZ LURES, ST.CLAIR HOUND, Also, Mac Kinnon Tackle from over
in the Muskoka North land featuring a unique glass weight. Next is the double blade spinner from Callandar Bait works from Greg Videcki. This will be added to the salamander creature from Ottawa's FIRST MATE LURES.
Finally it's the large double blade with a giant tube from WATERWOLF LURES from near Belleville.

"STING THE BLING"
My new acrylic painting features wonderful twin #8 blades and a dazzling orange and blue metallic dressing on the treble hook. This artwork features frenzied whirling action of the double blades and the sudden appearance of a muskellunge racing up to bite the spinner.

Interesting muskie art by Charles Weiss was on display at the St Catherines 2011 Muskie Odyssey, including his 67 inch wood carving of a dream muskie. He won a 1000 dollar coupon for a stay at Manitou Weather Station in beautiful northwest Ontario--a great fly-in lodge with amazing fishing. The lure above is made by Shawn/Hosebaits. It's probably appearing in a painting in the 2012 Classic Muskie Calendar.

northern pike wood carving

This is the start of a wonderful carving.
This will be a wood carved replica of a 35 in/ lon Northern pike.
A pike this size is considered a great speciman size when fishing in THE COLD, CLEAR CANADIAN WATERS OF NORTH WESTERN ONTARIO
It's one of my favourite simple designs.The main body is carved from a piece of white pine 2.25 in x 5.25in x 31in
length.the tail section is added to form a smooth curved section of the tail.
The tail sewction is 8 in x 2in x 7in wide. Thiswill be glued in position after it's been cut and shaped. I'LL ADD MORE STEPS IN MY NEXT ENTRY.
